Roadside Picnic is a science fiction novel by Soviet-Russian authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, written in 1971 and published in 1972. The 1979 film Stalker, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, is loosely based on the novel, with a screenplay written by the Strugatsky brothers.
PICNIC IN THE CEMETERY by Njo Kong Kie (Music Picnic/Point View Art/Canadian Stage). At Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs (26 Berkeley). Like Fung Kwok Kee Gabriel’s set and Chan Chi Ian’s performance, so much of the mood of Picnic is diaphanous and twee. There is an overall sense of aversion to the graver aspects of communing with the dead.

Few places kill the appetite quicker than a cemetery. The sight of appalled mourners sobbing hysterically when someone produces a sandwich instead of a bunch of flowers is enough to put anyone off a meal, however hungry they may be. Besides that, it’s tricky to focus on food when you’re surrounded by recently deceased, mouldering corpses. However, though the modern cemetery may be about as appetising as a public toilet, this was not always the case. It might seem strange, but cemeteries were once picnic hotspots. Though we now think of a picnic as the perfect excuse for a family-focused day in the sun, the realities of domestic life differed considerably for earlier American citizens. Rampant disease and poverty meant that mortality rates and life expectancy were considerably lower for everyone. Death was a part of daily life.
A Picnic In The Cemetery. As you spread your sandwiches out on the table stone, Why not read the lichened inscription beneath your lunch? In life I was eaten up by pride, ambition, envy Rest on my resting place. Be thankful for birdsong. I have no heart left to be stirred by it. My name is a half way pause between moss and ivy Not worth a glance or a thought, a second look. Be thankful for today, the warm sun on your head Resting light as thistledown on the nettles. When you walk off over the grass Reflect on the breath that enters and leaves your body
