Symphony No. 3 in C minor ("Organ"), Op. 78. 1. Adagio - Allegro moderato -. Camille Saint-Saëns. Daniel Chorzempa, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Edo de Waart. 3. Allegro moderato - Presto - Allegro moderato -. Pictures at an Exhibition (Kartinki s vïstavski), for orchestra, orchestrated by Ravel.

Conductor – Edo de Waart. Orchestra – Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. Organ – Daniel Chorzempa. Recorded: De Doelen, Rotterdam, 11/1976 (Saint-Saëns) 12/1974 (Moussorgsky).

Daniel Chorzempa (organ) Rotterdam Philharmonic Edo de Waart (conductor). Saint-Saens' 'Organ Symphony' and Muossorgsky's 'Pictures' - orchestral version, were recorded in 1976 and 1974. The performances are good/very good - with virtually inaudible tape hiss. Of the two, 'Pictures' has a much livelier and more interesting acoustic but despite their quadrophonic origins neither (in stereo) delivers much in the way of layering or stage depth. Pairing Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition with the famous Organ Symphony is a brilliant if unusual idea; it isn't often that music lovers can get so many orchestral showpieces on a single disk. Unlike the disk's opener, Pictures starts out a little more reserved than some of the famous bombastic recordings, but rest assured there is much power here - perhaps a measure of the colossus we meet just two short minutes in.

SAINT-SAËNS, CAMILLE: Symphony No. 3 in C minor "Organ" & MUSSORGSKY, MODEST: Pictures at an Exhibition (orchestrated by Maurice Ravel) Daniel Chorzempa (organ), Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Edo de Waart (conductor). I have heard the mentioned performance of Saint-Saëns just in stereo. The CD release was flat and uninteresting although it was later digitally remastered. It is good to have the Mussorgsky/Ravel on SACD.

SAINT-SAËNS: Symphony No. 78 "Organ Symphony. MUSSORGSKY-RAVEL: Pictures at an Exhibition. Daniel Chorzempa, organist; Rotterdam Philharmonic Orch/Edo de Waart, cond. Swiss-born conductor Silvio Varviso studied conducting with Clemens Krauss. It was recorded in the Dutch orchestra's concert hall, De Doelen, in November 1976, and uses a Flentrop organ which produces rich reed sound along with impressive if not earth-shaking bass. Pictures was recorded in December 1974 in the same hall. The original quadraphonic recordings of both very naturally capture orchestral sound and for the audio-fixated there are some rather massive bass drum whacks.
