This album was recorded live during the 2002 Festival de l'Imaginaire in Paris. Besides being a rapturing concert, it constituted an event, as this was the first time a Uighur diaspora group performed in Europe. The Uighurs are a large Eastern Turkic ethnic group historically established in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The music blends elements regularly found in Middle Eastern and Central Asian traditions, as the Uighurs have developed their own form of the mâqâm (called muqâm), a musical suite found in Muslim cultures. The liner notes indicate that the music has not been influenced by Chinese classical music, but some melodies come very close to Chinese modes, although one could hardly mistake Aripjân Muhamadov's ghijak (a spike fiddle similar to the Armenian kamantcha) for an erhu.

Uighur culture is one of the most ancient in Central Asia. Its core is in Xinjiang (Chinese Turkestan), but it is also present in the Uighur diaspora, particularly in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Uighur music is rooted in a brilliant cultural background which blended indo-persian, turk, muslim, and also buddhist and manichean elements.

This is a list of folk music traditions, with styles, dances, instruments and other related topics. The term folk music can not be easily defined in a precise manner; it is used with widely varying definitions depending on the author, intended audience and context within a work. Similarly, the term traditions in this context does not connote any strictly-defined criteria.
