Killjoy Confetti also have a joyful sense of barely held together competence (more Velvet Underground than Shaggs, thankfully) in their playing that works for them. Nevertheless, all of the imperfections of this band work and don't seem hip or calculated on this album. The standout track is the sinuous "Neer Neer," with its infectious guitar line and angular groove.

Fun is an album by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston. It was his first major label release, as well as his only album for Atlantic Records. The album was produced by Butthole Surfers member Paul Leary. In 1993, Johnston, gaining popularity, was offered a contract under Elektra Records; although a beneficial agreement for Johnston, he refused, since Metallica, a band Johnston believed to be possessed by Satan, was under the label.

Killjoy Confetti does a remarkable job of recreating their studio performance in a live setting. They don't do too much improv, but they clearly enjoy what they're playing and communicate it to the audience. I'm a big fan of local music because the small-town bands still play music they like, in front of audiences who (mostly) give them a chance. These four ladies stand out from the crowd around here. Either album is representative of the band's sound; check out Into The Light for a more stripped-down sound and punk influence, or The Fun Is for more polished (but still strong) and complex sound. Recordings: Into The Light, released as by Arcade (2003).
