These five piano trios were written in the space of nine years (1840 to 1849) toward the end of Spohr's life (1784 to 1859). Therefore whilst we are unable to use these as signposts of his compositional development throughout his career, we do encounter Spohr in his maturity and are rewarded with five pieces of great merit. Ideas are usually strong in the classical tradition and their development is well worked out. Spohr knew his craft and these pieces are full of charm (if not fire). The music is solid throughout with flashes of brilliance in places.
