Only for completionists (0%). While the sound of Blasphemy is initially fresh and interesting, it really starts to get tiring towards the end. The texture created throughout the album is very similar, with the guitar and violin having almost identical timbres from song to song. As well as a similar sound, nearly every song uses the same basic structure: a short melodic section that gets repeated for a minute or two, a minute or two of wandering into solos, and a reprisal of the introductory passage to close

Pitom, led by guitarist Yoshie Fruchter, is influenced by iconic musical figures from visionary seventies fusion bands like Frank Zappa and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, as well as early nineties grunge/punk bands including Nirvana and The Melvins. Blasphemy and other Serious Crimes is even supposed to be a sonic homage to the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), in a manner that mixes the seriousness of the day with a tongue-in-cheek style and sound

Pitom's sophomore effort is entitled Blasphemy and Other Serious Crimes. If that sounds a bit heavy, consider that the album is an attempt to grapple, in musical terms, with Yom Kippur (the Jewish day of repentance). Fruchter is an observant Jew, which makes the subject matter and the tone of the proceedings easier to understand. He also has described Pitom’s music as punkassjewjazz which should give you an idea of how serious he is about not taking himself too seriously

Pitom's Jeremy Brown on violin and Yoshie Fruchter on guitar. Blasphemy and Other Serious Crimes, the latest album from the jazz-metal band Pitom, has a title that makes explicit reference to the vidui, or confession-one of Yom Kippur’s central prayers. The vidui is a recitation of the many ways in which we sin-by robbery, by lying, by blasphemy. But while the album may flirt with sin in its raucous approach, it comes from a place of devotion. Yoshie Fruchter, the leader of Pitom, is the son and grandson of cantors, and professes an abiding love for the traditional melodies.

Pitom's second album, Blasphemy and Other Serious Crimes, was released in 2011. Fruchter again composed and played guitar, with the album further exploring Jewish music along with surf and sludge metal influences Fruchter's music combines elements of jazz, klezmer, rock, surf and heavy metal, while exploring themes of God, religion, repentance and redemption. Both Pitom albums have been released.
