Lennox Berkeley wrote his Concerto for Two Pianos in 1948 in response to a commission from the Henry Wood Concert Society. The medium of the double concerto was a comparatively unusual one, though there were significant precedents in works by Berkeley’s idol Mozart, and also Brahms and Poulenc. Berkeley himself said in a programme note that his intention was ‘to contrast the sound of two pianofortes with that of the orchestra, avoiding thereby the familiar textures of the ordinary one-pianoforte concerto. The soloists, therefore, are nearly always used as a unit, and not as individuals. Michael Berkeley: Concerto for Orchestra, "Seascapes" - II. Concerto for Orchestra 'Seascapes'. Michael Berkeley Composer. BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Author: Peter Dickinson. Berkeley, L & M Orchestral Works. Concertos for Two Pianos and Orchestra. Gregorian Variations. Concerto for Orchestra 'Seascapes'. The Concerto for Orchestra, subtitled Seascapes, was a BBC commission for the Proms in 2005 and is dedicated to Richard Hickox. As a response to news of the death of Jane Attenborough and members of her family in the Tsunami, the elegiac slow movement memorably catches the mood of that horrifying moment. It contains a trumpet solo written for and brilliantly delivered by Phillipe Schartz.

Francis Poulenc's Concerto pour deux pianos (Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra) in D minor, FP 61, was commissioned by and dedicated to the Princess Edmond de Polignac and composed over the period of three months in the summer of 1932. It is often described as the climax of Poulenc's early period. The composer wrote to the Belgian musicologist Paul Collaer: "You will see for yourself what an enormous step forward it is from my previous work and that I am really entering my great period.

Lento Lennox Berkeley; Nicholas Daniel; BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Richard Hickox. 5. II. Allegro vivace - Meno vivo - Tempo I - Un poco meno vivo Lennox Berkeley; Nicholas Daniel; BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Richard Hickox. 6. III. If you care about fine music of the modern British School, then you will want this disc as a matter of course, and it's worth having solely for Michael Berkeley's Oboe Concerto. Certainly both concertante works give a big boost in quality to a medium not exactly overflowing with masterpieces, and on that count alone this release qualifies as a significant musical event.
