WANDER/WONDER by BALAM ACAB, released 28 August 2011 1. Welcome 2. Apart 3. Motion 4. Expect 5. Now Time 6. Oh, Why 7. Await 8. Fragile Hope. ALEX LOPES Balam Acab is one of the most interesting music producers out there. The way he uses ambient, psychedelic, electronic and a lot of otherworldly genres to create a mix of amazing sensations and feelings through his music is just inexplicable. I'm glad I could get this thing, and here's to another new album from him in 2017!

Balam Acab, the project of 20-year-old Pennsylvanian Alec Koone, was slotted with witch house when he released his See Birds EP in 2010. Here, his primary concern is simple aesthetic beauty, the way a small and specific combination of sounds, carefully arranged but given room to breathe, can have a deep emotional impact. Balam Acab, the project of 20-year-old Pennsylvanian Alec Koone, was slotted with witch house when he released his See Birds EP in 2010.

Wander/Wonder proves that Balam Acab has the chops, so lacking in his contemporaries, to create a cohesive, consistent album, but its ambiguous, being sonically there but too emotionally insulated to leave a lasting impression. The neat trick to Wander/Wonder is that by being vague emotionally, it invites an objective appreciation for what’s beautiful, hence all that water merrily swashing away in the background

Wander, Wonder ‎(LP, Album). Wander, Wonder ‎(CD, Album).

Creative and ultimately dreamy, the production on this record is first rate. 79. Beautifully woven, handmade music so sseductive that allows you to cross to the other side.

The underwater chasm that graces Wander/Wonder reflects how Koone's debut full-length is even more deeply aquatic than the See Birds EP was, as well as its subtlety and narrower focus. See Birds was just five songs long, but it covered more musical territory; by contrast, Wander/Wonder is an exercise in depth, a flowing suite of mermaid’s lullabies that turn seductive. The opening track, Welcome, does just that, beckoning with low tones that could be whale songs that pull the listener in until the song’s luminous heart reveals itself like a pearl in an oyster.
