In many ways, this is a finer rural/rock fusion album than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the first Flying Burrito Brothers album, or the Beau Brummels' efforts during this same period, and an indispensable part of any collection of '60s music.

Copperfields is the fifth album by bluegrass group The Dillards. The album continues the country rock style begun on the group's previous album, Wheatstraw Suite, featuring the same prominent orchestra and increased use of drums (played by Paul York), electric bass and even electric guitar on "Brother John.
Wheatstraw Suite is the fourth album by progressive bluegrass band The Dillards, released in 1968 (see 1968 in music). It is the Dillards' fourth album, and their first to move away from their traditional bluegrass sound by using a full orchestra and occasional drums. The band had been moving toward a more contemporary sound for a few years (they toured with The Byrds, featuring future Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin), but Wheatstraw Suite was the first time they explored the new sound on a full-length album. The seeds of the album began when the Dillards were on a vacation from. Wheatstraw Suite was re-released on CD by Collector's Choice Music in 2002, along with Copperfields, its 1970 follow-up album.
As Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman take a well-deserved victory lap across America to celebrate the 50th anniversary of SWEETHEARTS OF THE RODEO, it's a good time to re-examine another seminal country-rock album from 1968 – The Dillards' WHEATSTRAW SUITE. The quartet had cut three previous bluegrass collections before dipping their toes into folk-rock on a couple singles as a lead-up to waxing this near-masterpiece for Elektra Records. Given the group's roots, you'd expect the deft finger-picking of Rodney Dillard and Herb Pedersen and the spot-on harmonies here.
