Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" (1955) is a popular song with lyrics by Fran Landesman, "the poet laureate of lovers and losers," set to music by Tommy Wolf. The title is a jazz rendition of the opening line of . Eliot's The Waste Land, "April is the cruellest month". The song was featured in the 1959 Broadway musical The Nervous Set, but was written in 1955 before this musical and was incorporated into it.

Roy's sis. My fave today. This is really good, tho. And Ella's. Great song, but my tip of the hat goes to Sarah Vaughan and Ella. Recorded for the album of the same title in 1955. It's also one of the very first recordings of this song, which was written in 1955. I'm still awaiting a superior version.

It's one of those songs that most jazz singers feel they must attempt at some point or other. Norah Jones demo-ed it for her Bluenote audition, in fact. The vaguely exotic "Lazy Afternoon" was also very popular among cabaret singers at the time. Otherwise, this is a typically fresh Jackie & Roy outing with some older standards ("Lover"), a bonafide jazz tune (Clifford Brown's "Daahoud"), and some choice novelties and unknowns ("Tiny Told Me," "You Smell So Good"!).

This early recording by Jackie and Roy finds them accompanied by an outstanding trio consisting of; Barney Kessel (guitar), Red Mitchel (bass) and Shelley Manne (drums.) Granted, their vocal style and repertoire are not everyone's "cup of tea", but their well crafted arrangements and vocal harmonies present these elegant melodies and lyrics in their best light. The performance of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" is an essential version.
