Paley: Tom and I were sitting in a room in the Nickelodeon offices with some execs, and they said they wanted to create an episode where Gary gets lost. Paley: You gotta censor yourself sometimes. But sometimes we get stuff past the executives. On It's a SpongeBob Christmas, we did a message from SpongeBob and the cast. It's a very traditional but deadpan thing to do on Christmas records, like with The Beach Boys, Ronettes, Crystals. On the Beach Boys’ message, Dennis Wilson stuttered in the studio and Tom tried not to laugh.
Tom Paley, who has died aged 89, was an American folk singer and musician with a lifelong love of country music and old-time styles from before the second world war, and a man with a quite extraordinary history. He could often be seen playing at sessions at the Shakespeare’s Head pub in Islington, and at other venues close to the flat where he lived in north London, but I suspect that few of those who listened to his banjo, guitar or fiddle work were aware of his remarkable career. Ski Williams, an artist based in north London, was a great admirer and determined that Paley should record a new album, surrounded by younger players. He assembled a co-operative of friends, fans and musicians to make that happen, and the result was Roll On, Roll On Tom Paley’s Old-Time Moonshine Revue, released on the new Hornbeam label in 2012.
Tom Tom Club is the first album by Tom Tom Club, released in 1981, containing the UK hit singles "Wordy Rappinghood", which reached No. 7 in June 1981; "Genius of Love", which reached No. 65 in October of the same year; and "Under the Boardwalk", which reached No. 22 in August 1982. When released in the United States, "Genius of Love" peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both "Wordy Rappinghood" and "Genius of Love" topped the US dance chart.
