The Swimming Hour’ kicks off with a tongue-twisting slice of Pavement-esque pop called ‘Two Way Action’, and takes in a variety of bases and reference points, ancient and modern.
In 2001, the Bowl of Fire released their third album, The Swimming Hour, a dramatic departure from their previous recordings. It featured a mixture of styles, from the zydeco-influenced "Core and Rind" to more straightforward rock songs such as "11:11". Due to this eclectic nature, Bird has often referred to it as his "jukebox album". Andrew Bird in concert 2005. The Bowl of Fire unofficially disbanded in 2003, and Bird went on to radically re-invent himself as a solo artist. His two subsequent albums were released on Ani Difranco's Righteous Babe Records label. 2003's Weather Systems (originally released on Grimsey Records) was a sparse record with a dramatic change in musical direction. It featured the tracks "Skin" and "I", proto-versions of songs that would later become "Skin, Is My" (The Mysterious Production of Eggs) and "Imitosis" (Armchair Apocrypha).
Listening to Swimming Hour is like taking a walking tour through 20th century musical history. Andrew Bird, a major contributor to nouveau-swing band the Squirrel Nut Zippers, mixes numerous styles and genres such as classical, Latin, and gypsy music, among others. The song "Why" feels like a jazz song from a 1950s film noir soundtrack, and "Satisfied" blends gospel with straight-ahead rock & roll. The vast array of musical styles are united by Bird's haunting vocals as well as lyrics that are both thoughtful and whimsical. While Swimming Hour is clearly an album obsessed with musical history, Bird manages to mix in enough of his own unique style to prevent the album from feeling like a musty old museum piece.

11:11 blew me away when I first heard it, and was my first introduction the the Bowl of Fire. This album sticks due to its "jukebox" nature, which really shows off Bird's range. Top album from his Bowl of Fire days. 80. Definitely one of Andrew Bird's most focused and energetic records. The production is miles ahead of his newer records. His trademark violin sticks around but it feels less intrusive due to the diverse instrumentation that shines through on here.

Album The Swimming Hour. Elder Green is dead and gone Lost his way going to town Don't know who he is or what he's done But it sure sounds sweet rolling off the tongue Yeah it sure sounds sweet rolling off the tongue If I was in an old hotel That happened to be on fire Maybe I'd jump or Maybe I'd reconsider.
