Serenata Cubana, one of Fernández's later efforts, is a comprehensive survey of Cuban piano music starting with the earliest known contradanza in 1805, and ending with the rise of Castro's communist regime in 1959. Serenata Cubana contains a wealth of little known or unknown music. Cuba is an extraordinarily musical nation, with its generally one-or-two page, two-strains-long contradanza serving as its central indigenous form. Some critics rank such pieces with low accord, often citing "lack of depth and substance" as justification.
