Steve Reich: Double Sextet; 2x5. 2010. Steve Reich's 2007 Double Sextet, which won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize, is given its first performance by eighth blackbird, the group for whom it was written. For most of his career, Reich has constructed his music with canons using matched pairs of instruments, and he writes that when he was presented with the request from eighth blackbird, he felt he could only write the piece for two identical ensembles, with the live players performing to an accompaniment they had previously recorded, creating the effect of two antiphonal sextets. It's that version that's played here, although. Bang on a Can, eighth blackbird.

Double Sextet was commissioned by Eighth Blackbird. 2x5 was commissioned by the Manchester International Festival in association with Casa da Música (Porto). Double Sextet: Recorded August 27-28, 2009, at WFMT Studio, Chicago, IL Mixed at John Kilgore Sound & Recording, New York, NY. 2x5: Recorded April 13 & 26, 2009, and February 4 & 26, 2010, at John Kilgore Sound & Recording Mixed at John Kilgore Sound & Recording

Eighth Blackbird/Bang on a Can (Nonesuch). Nonesuch has been documenting Steve Reich's career for more than 20 years now, generally with the soloists and ensembles for whom each of the works was composed. This latest release brings the story up to last year, when Bang on a Can gave the first performance of 2 x 5 at the Manchester festival. The Double Sextet had appeared the previous year, and was awarded a Pulitzer prize, rather belated recognition of arguably the most influential American composer alive.
