The ‘Handel’ variations were first performed by Brahms himself, no mean pianist, at a concert in Vienna on 29 November 1861. Also in the programme was the G minor Piano Quartet, as well as music by Bach and Schumann, all executed, we are told, ‘as unconcernedly as though he were playing at home to friends’.

The Variations and Fugue for Piano in E♭ major, Op. 35 are a set of fifteen variations for solo piano composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1802. They are commonly referred to as the Eroica Variations because a different set of variations on the same theme were used as the finale of his Symphony No. 3 Eroica composed the following year.
Beethoven wrote many sets of variations for piano, the first set written when he was twelve years old in 1782, and the final set in 1823, the famous Diabelli Variations opus 120. Beethoven's first efforts were variations on themes of other composers, most often from operas of the day. Beethoven didn't place too much importance on the majority of these sets of variations as he assigned opus numbers to only four of them.
