Although Crane was born six years after the end of the war, his novel has been recognized for its realistic description of battle. In the novel, Henry was one of the enlisted soldiers in the 304th New York Regiment. He got the wound that he wants to have when he joins a group of fellow soldiers retreating from the battlefield.

Stephen Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage without ever having witnessed combat. However, his use of vivid imagery, color motifs, and his ability to describe the emotional highs and lows of an insecure soldier have earned the novel many accolades. While the novel only takes place over the course of a few days, it is a story of a lifetime for a young private named Henry Fleming.

First published in 1895, The Red Badge of Courage written by Stephen Crane is a story about an idealistic young man who comes of age during a horrific battle in the Civil War. Henry Fleming has always dreamed of being a hero. He can’t wait to be old enough to join the army and fight in glorious battles. He pictures himself coming home with great wounds and telling stories of his brave deeds. Or dying in battle and leaving weeping women in his wake. All would tell tales of the brave young man who died for his country.
