Profile: American guitarist and mandolinist. Urban Mandolin ‎(CD, Album). Not On Label (Chris Biesterfeldt Self-Released). Phineas ‎(CD, Album).

Chris Biesterfeldt: guitarist, mandolinist, composer, educator. Matthew Rybicki – Matthew is a great jazz bass player who played on Phineas, Chris’s guitar trio album of Phineas Newborn Jr. tunes and arrangements. Check out his work with Jon Herrington for a good place to start. Eric Halvorson – Chris has worked as much with Eric as much any drummer in NYC doing Broadway shows, singer/songwriter gigs and recording sessions. Eric sounds great on everything he plays on including Chris’s jazz mandolin trio album Urban Mandolin.

Chris Biesterfeldt: Urban Mandolin by Jack Bowers, published on November 2, 2013. While the mandolin lacks the guitar's range, elegance or subtlety, Biesterfeldt makes the most of its assets, which include unambiguous good humor and visceral appeal. This is music to which toe-tapping is compulsory, not optional. And even though Urban Mandolin is blazoned as jazz, the specter of bluegrass often tarries close at hand even as Biesterfeldt and his teammates labor earnestly to assure he remains at arm's length. Such is the nature of the mandolin, even in the capable hands of a jazz partisan such as Biesterfeldt.

Chris Biesterfeldt – Mandolin. Adam Armstrong – Bass. Eric Halvorson – Drums. The mandolin is an instrument that is rarely heard in jazz, although there are such exceptions as the musicians who played it in the skiffle era, and Dave Grisman, who collaborated with Stéphane Grappelli in the 1970s. One usually associates the mandolin with folk music, but I have played alongside a mandolinist who could play excellent jazz. Dizzy Gillespie’s composition Bebop opens the album with evidence of Biesterfeldt’s fast fingerwork on the mandolin, which has always struck me as a difficult instrument because of the small space allowed for the fingers in contrast with the guitar. This track also reveals the dexterity of the accompanying bassist and drummer, especially when bassist Adam Armstrong plays a solo with the mandolin strumming as accompaniment, and drummer Eric Halvorson swaps fluent fours with Chris.

And a big thanks to Donald Brown who introduced me to Phineas Newborn's music and was my most influential teacher. Devamını Gör. L'atelier Clair Music.
