In a sense, the jazz supergroup heard on the album - saxist Joshua Redman, cornetist Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade - is paying tribute to a tribute: Old and New Dreams, a quartet of Coleman associates, including Redman’s father Dewey, that performed music written and inspired by their trailblazing maestro in the Seventies and Eighties. Drummer-composer Andrew Cyrille, who turns 80 next year, is in the midst of a late-career renaissance, gigging with a wide variety of groups and convening unusual, ingenious lineups on recording sessions for legendary label ECM. His second bandleading effort for the label retains guitarist Bill Frisell from 2016’s The Declaration of Musical Independence and brings in trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, another jazz elder who’s had a major resurgence in recent years.

Blue Box 2: Finest Jazz Vocalists collects a wide range of jazz singers, from Hadda Brooks to Mose Allison to Sarah Vaughan to Julie London. Contemporary performances like Bobby McFerrin's "Blue Bossa" and "Friends," and Eliane Elias' "Don't Ever Go Away" are as prominent in the collection as classic ones like June Christy's "Something Cool" and Nancy Wilson's "Guess Who I Saw Today.

Consider jazz in the 1970s, and the years surrounding the decade. Ideas about harmonic openness, electric instruments, funk, samba, and the entire career of John Coltrane had now thoroughly infused the mainstream. That, and the ongoing concerns of black people in the United States, helped to foster a subset of sounds now loosely lumped under the umbrella of cosmic or ecstatic or, occasionally, spiritual jazz. This music was often energetic and aspirational, giving the impression of great possibility within lax, permeable limits. A new compilation called J-Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 portrays that extended decade in a country where, in the wake of post-World War II American occupation, the jazz community grew enormously. In particular, J-Jazz highlights independent releases never before issued outside Japan, mostly by artists who haven’t seen much international attention.
