Daylight Dies is a melodic death-doom band from North Carolina, United States. Daylight Dies was formed in 1996 by Barre Gambling and Jesse Haff. In 1999, the two recorded the band's first demo, The Long Forgotten Demo. In 2000, Guthrie Iddings joined the band as the vocalist and the trio recorded the band's second demo, Idle, which was released through Tribunal Records. In 2001, Egan O'Rourke joined as the bassist and the band recorded a two-song demo that was meant for record labels only.

Daylight Dies is from Raleigh, North Carolina, but No Reply sounds far more like something from Sweden or Great Britain than it does anything from the band's home state (or from the . They play Goth-tinged doom/death metal in a style that is strongly reminiscent of early-to-middle period Katatonia or Paradise Lost. With nine songs clocking in at just over an hour total - and averaging just under seven minutes each - this is an album that takes its time in driving its point home.

No reply is Daylight Dies first studio album and the only one to feature vocalist Guthrie Iddings. Iddings does a decent job vocally however we have all heard the screams before. There is little to no variety and the lack of cleans which later showcase themselves on the bands follow-up records detract from the overall album. Vocally, Nathan Ellis (vocalist on the latest studio albums, dismantling devotion and lost to the living) does a much better job although I suspect a lot of that might owe to better production and mixing.

The impact of Katatonia’s first two albums Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day was enormous in the underground metal community, but it wasn’t noticed until decades later, when more and more artists declared their admiration for the Swedish band. The phenomenon never became mainstream, but it spawned a lot of derivative (often excellent) music and even some imitators around the globe. One of the bands who had the (mis)fortune of misinterpreting Katatonia’s music enough to try as hell to replicate most of its elements were the Americans Daylight Dies. Founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, the foursome released their debut album No Reply in 2002, in the wake of many Gothic Metal bands in Europe who had started to tour and exhibit in the USA (Katatonia included). There’s little doubt of what one may think the band’s debut album No Reply will sound: the album is standard Hard Rock/Gothic Rock in standard tuning, exploiting harmonization with the bass guitar to give the illusion seven string guitars are used. The rhythms are straight, no-frills 4/4 and the guitar parts are active but never complicated, the songs display plenty of dynamic variation to hide the fact they tend to be longer than normality (all over 6 minutes), with plenty of clean guitar arpeggios reminiscent of Katatonia and The Smiths, although if the faster moments recall a more intimate His Infernal Majesty. The leads betray a Blues Rock influence due to the heavy use of bending. The vocals are mediocre anxious growls that don’t show any personality (maybe that’s why the original vocalist departed after the debut album’s recording), and the lyrics deliver abstract messages hidden by melancholic imagery (“Four corners, neatly cleaned / Bone white clock / Counts away / Seconds of life”, “Regret, every moment marks a breaking of my heart / And now I'm left alone with this ghost that I've become / For years I've built this monument of pain / I must find a way / To never feel again”).All in all, No Reply is not a bad debut, and it’s enough consistent to suggest many potentiality, especially in “Four Corners”. However, it’s repetitive, due to its 61 minutes duration, so listening to it may prove to be more difficult than it actually is. All is good as it should be… but Swallow the Sun’s debut was an authentic beast: newcomers of this style should give the priority to the other band before exploring Daylight Dies, who, with time, would have proven to be consistent, but were less active and resistant to musical evolution.Highlights: “The Line that Divides”, “Four Corners”.
