The Second Quartet, completed in 1915, marked the transition between the "English" style of Bridge's early works (epitomised by the 1910 Phantasy Piano Quartet on this disc) and the more outward looking modernism of his greatest achievements, while the Fourth was completed in 1937, four years before his death. It's perhaps the most perfectly proportioned of all his quartets, containing its highly wrought chromaticism within an elegant, three-movement sequence of classical forms and the Magginis hit that balance exactly.
Phantasy Quartet, Op. 2, is the common name of a piece of chamber music by Benjamin Britten, a quartet for oboe and string trio composed in 1932. In the composer's catalogue, it is given as Phantasy, subtitled: Quartet in one movement for oboe, violin, viola, violoncello. It was first performed in August 1933 as a BBC broadcast.
