Amber Arcades' debut album, 2016's Fading Lines, was an unassuming gem of an indie pop surprise. Annelotte de Graaf's lovely way with a quiet melody and the easygoing nature of the arrangements and production (courtesy of the Men's Ben Greenberg) made the album go down like a smooth summer cocktail. Cannonball has all the hallmarks that made the album such a treat, with a slightly scruffier live-band sound. Kicking off with a sprightly, shockingly poppy version of Nick Drake's "Which Will," the rest of the EP keeps things light and polite, while proving that de Graaf did not exhaust the well as far as songwriting goes.

Amber Arcades (born 15 December 1988) is the stage name of Annelotte de Graaf, a Dutch singer-songwriter from Utrecht.
Amber Arcades makes wistful, very pretty dream pop music that is a lot more dreamy than it is poppy. Especially for a debut album, the sound is impressively focused and cohesive, and Amber Arcades display some solid songwriting chops. The album does sort of seem to float away on its own lightweight-ness, however, and the melodies don't stick as much as you'd hope.
Dutch songstress Annelotte de Graaf (no, not Amber Arcades!) has been trickling out charming little gems for a few years now, and her latest was recorded in just two days last fall.
