It was recorded January 18 and 19, 1961, in Los Angeles, California. The music was arranged by Johnny Mandel and Russ Garcia and features Ben Webster and Mel Lewis among the personnel. Most of this two-LP set is an expanded version of a 1963 album co-led by tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster and the young pianist Joe Zawinul; at the time Zawinul was a regular member of Cannonball Adderley's band. The eight selections are joined by three alternate takes and four of the songs find cornetist Thad Jones making the quartet a quintet. In addition this two-fer has most of a 1957 session that teamed Webster with the personable trombonist Bill Harris. Throughout the set, the music is essentially mainstream swing with Webster heard in top form.
