Album Name Indemnity. 6. You're Not Real, Girl.

The album concludes with the majestic My Tall Man (Live), co-written by M. Gira but never released before. As dark love ballads go, this tuneful elegy with its dreamy ambiance is a poetic masterpiece. On a par with the most memorable Swans, World of Skin ballads sung by Jarboe on albums such as Blood, Women, Roses, The Burning World and Love of Life. Indemnity 1 and 2 are outstanding accomplishments. The project does not merely breathe new life into old classics, in most cases it surpasses the concept of the ‘cover version’ to create entirely new, magnificent music. jarboe - please remember me - from INDEMNITY 4:16. Indemnity comprises interpretations of Swans classics from the albums Greed/Holy Money (1986), Children of God (1986), The Burning World (1989), Ten Songs for Another World (by World of Skin, 1990), White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991) and The Great Annihilator (1995) plus a new track co-written by Michael Gira. The imaginative arrangements reveal different dimensions of Swans’ classic compositions, while the vocals and vocal effects conjure stunning atmospherics.

Indemnity comprises reworkings of classics from the first incarnation of Swans and from World Of Skin, selected from Jarboe’s self-released CDrs Indemnity 1 and 2 plus a track co-written by Michael Gira which had never been recorded. Atmospheric classical pieces alternate with powerful rock, post-rock and industrial explorations. Swans’ familiar songs undergo melodic and rhythmic metamorphoses around exquisite arrangements. The most striking element, however, is the contour harmonies generated by Jarboe’s layered vocals. The delivery on Universal Emptiness is the most straightforward. A solemn, insistent drumbeat rules the first bass-heavy part. Just beyond halfway, the tempo lifts as a fuller instrumentation expands the sound. Holy Money, a mocking hymn to Mammon, sets simple but stylish chorales against a pounding industrial background interspersed by authoritative yet hilarious spoken commands. The tinkling cash register against spooky vocalising at the end leaves a perplexing impression of the sinister and the humorous. The Child’s Right appeared on Ten Songs for Another World (1990) by World of Skin. Tension arises as pleasing guitar textures meet flute-like pitched drones and disquieting polyphonic singing. Several of Jarboe’s legion of voices emerge, twisting and twirling and summoning uncanny overtones.Enchanting vocal strands emanate from the interaction of soprano and contralto on the murder ballad Blood And Honey with its stately keyboard patterns. In the concluding phase, a spoken narration amplifies a sense of the sacred.Tonal and tempo shifts over spellbinding rhythms cook up a mesmerising effect on Celebrity Lifestyle. As stunning solo and choral voices blend with pitched drones and restrained rock guitars, the music reaches an astonishing apex, totally transfigured from the 1994 midtempo drum and guitar track on The Great Annihilator. The Miracle Of Love’s uptempo arrangement encompasses lively percussion, rolling piano, intricate keyboard flourishes and multitracked vocals framed by a jangling background drone. Miracle represents another triumph of transformation, from the searing rock of the original into a perfect pop song.Jarboe’s numerous vocal personae on I Am The Sun encourage the hoarse lead vocal’s deranged declarations with gasps and whispers against a pulsating blend of guitars and drums. Others, including a seemingly male voice, join in a hypnotic call-and-response before the frenzied final gasps of the crazed crone. A world away from the original rock chant with its stop-start structure on The Great Annihilator. The elegiac My Tall Man (Live) is exquisitely crafted and achingly delivered, a chanson noire with the dreamlike quality of masterpieces like Blackmail and In My Garden on Children of God. What a magnificent song to close this magnificent album.
