Why, then, does Schubert's great song cycle about disappointed love so often elude him? Though he brings his usual vocal splendor and gratifying lyricism to the music in ways that few tenors can dream of, both Wunderlich and his accompanist have a strangely club-footed sense of rhythm. What should often be an intimate expression is extroverted and even labored. David Patrick Stearns. Die schöne Müllerin, O. 5, . 95: 4. Danksagung an den Bach 05. 95: 5. Am Feierabend 06. 95: 6. Die schöne Müllerin (Op. 25, D. 795), is a song cycle by Franz Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the earliest extended song cycle to be widely performed. Considered one of Schubert's most important works, it is the first of his two seminal cycles (the other being his later Winterreise), and a pinnacle of Lied. It is widely performed and recorded.

Despite his premature death at age 35, Fritz Wunderlich was one of the great lyric tenors of the century, equally at home with Mozart's Magic Flute and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Why, then, does Schubert's great song cycle about disappointed love so often elude him? Though he brings his usual vocal splendor and gratifying lyricism to the music in ways that few tenors can dream of, both Wunderlich and his accompanist have a strangely club-footed sense of rhythm. Die Schöne Müllerin Tracklist. 1. Das Wandern Lyrics. About Die Schöne Müllerin. Recognized as one of Schubert’s masterpieces, this song cycle tells the story of a wandering miller who follows a brook to a mill and meets the beautiful miller’s daughter (the title translates as The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter ) and falls in love with him. However, she’s cool to his advances, and she later falls in love with a handsome hunter. In despair, the miller drowns himself in the brook. The music is written for a high voice and piano, but Schubert himself would transpose the songs down so that singers with lower voices could perform them
