German band Bethlehem have always been an ambiguous one, especially when regarding their career: there wasn’t an album that sounded identical to the other, but there were always some elements that differentiated it from the others. On Dark Metal, the focus was on insular blackness, on Dictius Te Necare it was dangerous and thuggish unpredictability: on Sardonischer Untergang Im Zeichen Irrelioser, the band seem to have taken a more serious approach, evident even in the mostly incomprehensible lyrics (“Hollenchristus Bose und Peinlichseisel Kuss / Master of die six silver strings von Holle / Auch 'mal 'n bischen / Unwichtig gewesen und / Sturmbas, die große Marquis von Eva mit / Schlankbleibwollsel in das kleine Pupslochsel / Ficksel, Facksel” | ”Hellchrist Evil and Painfulness Kiss / Master of the six silver strings of hell / as well was a little bit unimportant / Sturmbas, the great countess of Eva / Wanted to stay in the bar in the little asshole / Fuck, fucked”, “Wie der Mensch so stirbt sein Wasser / Und Christus ward oftmals begraben / In urkomischer Abendmahle” | “Man dies like his water / And often Christ was buried / In a hilarious communion”).But don’t be worried, the band is still the same as ever. Some of the songs, in fact, share the same fate as others as they fall into clean-guitar arpeggios and hollow quietness for no apparent motivation, trying to show distress and disquiet: in particular, “Teufelverrückt Gottdreizehn” (“Devilcrazy God Thirteen”) features a long-winded three-minutes intro that references Russian roulette. The portrait should then be flawless… but it’s not. Though Bethlehem are obviously recreating Dictius Te Necare, there are some strange elements that some listeners may find inexcusable. “Nexus” is an interlude graced by tribal pedal-drumming and machine-noises at the end, and the falls of dynamics on some tracks seem exaggerated, such when the tracks sudden transform from Black Metal to nothing short than a single vibraphone resonating in the air. Also, the vocals here don’t seem to be very coherent to the band’s style. Ex Deinonychus frontman Marco Kehren is completely unsuited, because on most of the tracks he tries as hell to sound desperate and like he was crying, but he is no different than what he was doing on his previous project, thus he seems almost ridiculous. The more violent vocals, actually, are delivered by Cathrin Campen, a female singer who however sounds faceless. Were these two vocalists recruited because the band couldn’t find Landfermann again?At the end of the day, this album is unpredictable and strange as ever, and though it isn’t bad, some elements don’t seem to fit in it. There are plenty of highlights here, but this time they seem uniformly tactless.Highlights: “Durch befleckte Berührung meiner Nemesis”, “Du sollst dich töten”, “Tote weiße Marder”.
