Quicksand is an American post-hardcore band from New York City, United States, founded in 1990. Their debut self-titled EP was followed by two major label albums, Slip (1993) and Manic Compression (1995). Quicksand's sound has been compared to that of post-hardcore bands Fugazi and Helmet. The band supported their releases with extensive touring but fell short of the mainstream success anticipated by their labels.

Released date 09 February 1993. Music StylePost Hardcore. Members owning this album11.

Slip is the debut studio album by American post-hardcore band Quicksand, released February 9, 1993 on the Polydor label The lead single off the album, "Fazer", became a college radio hit. The album was reissued on vinyl in 2012, through Dine Alone Records and Shop Radio Cast

Of course, Quicksand first had to record Slip. As with their debut EP, the band intentionally kept it old-school by working with New York hardcore producer Don Fury (Agnostic Front, Helmet, Gorilla Biscuits) as well as alt-rock producer Steven Haigler. With a larger budget and more time in the studio, Quicksand were able to craft a record that toed the line between fuming, raging dissonance and well-crafted melodicism. Quicksand shaped and contorted their core sound into an enthralling, rebellious album full of artistic passages that uplifted as they enervated. Album opener and lead single, Fazer, is deceptively straightforward.

There is more than one artist named Quicksand: 1) Quicksand is an American post-hardcore band from New York City founded in 1990 by Gorilla Biscuits guitarist Walter Schreifels. The band released two widely-acclaimed albums, Slip and Manic Compression, before disbanding in 1995. In 1997, Quicksand reunited, and embarked on a successful tour in 1998 with Deftones. Towards the end of the year they entered the studio to begin work on a follow-up to Manic Compression, but tensions within the band caused them to split up for good. Walter went on to form Rival Schools.

The band's debut, Slip, relies more on metal than punk, but that makes the music all the more effective - the group's attempts at punky fury simply aren't as strong as their brutal, gut-level heavy riff-rockers. Vocalist Walter Schreifels spews out enough angst-ridden lyrics, but what is important is how his voice fits into the dense wall of sound. Quicksand's music is about powerful anger, and the persistent, bludgeoning Slip delivers the goods.

An elastic Post-Grunge outfit that launched future Deftoness bassist Sergio Vega, Quicksand were, together with Helmet, Tool and Soundgarden, one of many American bands who pioneered the famous “Drop D metal” phenomenon. Of the four, they were the closest to Post-Hardcore dynamics and appeared more monotone and simple-minded, but at least they were consistent. Just don’t expect their debut album Slip to be a masterpiece. The re-issue includes a rocked-up cover of The Smith’s “How Soon Is Now?”.Highlights: “Fazer”, “Freezing Process”, “Too Official”.
