Bob Dylan released 'Time Out of Mind' on September 30, 1997. As an artist who had already reinvented himself several times over the years, Bob Dylan’s 1997 rebirth turned out to be not only his greatest comeback but also the greatest third act in rock ‘n’ roll history. Partly inspired by his own mortality, partly inspired by his own mythology and partly inspired by whatever goes on inside Bob Dylan’s head, Time Out of Mind is a milestone in a career that’s had plenty of them over the past five decades. But it’s not like the then-56-year-old singer-songwriter was at a total career standstill at that point
Today we explore Bob Dylan’s masterful comeback, 1997’s Time Out of Mind. But Time Out of Mind is not merely about death, though its inevitability looms at the periphery of these songs with the certainty of the setting sun; sometimes, death even seems for Dylan like the easy, desirous exit. Instead, Time Out of Mind is about dealing with life and its itinerant lows, knowing how it will all end, anyway. The blues become an emotional state of being. Through the cobwebs of his beleaguered voice, Dylan musters all the feelings of losing love, full of pride and insanity and lust and violence and humor, implicitly navigating the five stages of grief

He was the same producer who worked with Dylan on his 1989 "Oh Mercy" album (an album which I personally think is even better then this one) which many people hail as the beginning of Dylan's comeback musically after earlier albums he had released during the '80s that didn't do so well. Whether that is true or not this altogether is up there among the best work Dylan has made in his long career.

Time Out of Mind is thick with faraway ghosts. When he recorded Blood on the Tracks, Dylan was just entering middle age and was still a major figure in pop culture as he made a conscious return to the spare, folk-oriented intensity of his early albums
