But they did not have the telepathic understanding of each other that the Grateful Dead musicians did, so the music itself was less interesting, less exploratory, than "regular" Dead music. I was and am completely happy to have been present at this historic concert. My friends and I used to pile into my car and drive from the Philly burbs to the Fillmore East whenever the Dead were there. At a show in 1969 or 1970, we got to the Fillmore and two bands were set up. If I recall (and there may be a reason my recollections are "fuzzy") Jerry came out on stage at the beginning and explained that we would love this band opening for them, the Allman Brothers. I recall being totally blown away.
Their concerts were legendary proportions, and their mammoth breakthrough years of the late sixties, a whole new audience was discovering their magic thanks to their inspiring concerts and musical acumen.
