The New Miles Davis Quintet. 1956 rolled in with a very busy schedule for the quintet. This was the prime time to watch the group live as it gelled during a hectic performance schedule that went almost non-stop between October 1955 and July 1956. The band played New York City, Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis and other cities. This was the era when travelling jazz bands got one or two week engagements in clubs, playing multiple sets each night. On September 10, 1956 the band played its last session for the album that became ‘Round Midnight on Columbia. The obvious standout track from this session is a great version of Thelonious Monk’s title track. There are thousands of covers of this tune in the world of jazz, and this one, completed by the band in a single take, is definitely up there with the best of them.

The present CD comes from two radio broadcasts made in Miles Davis' hometown, Saint Louis, Missouri, during the period prior to John Coltrane's first departure from the band, and marks one of the paradoxically few testimonies of Miles performing in Saint Louis. The rarity of this document and the high intensity of the music make this an essential issue for all Miles and Trane fans. Recorded live at Peacock Alley, Saint Louis, Missouri, July 14 & 21, 1956. Two Saturday afternoon concerts. TOTAL TIME: 73:58 mins.
