Rudolf Serkin was born in Eger (now Czech Republic) to Russian immigrants in 1903 - he was to become one of the truly great performers of classical and romantic piano music. Serkin studied with Schönberg and his playing boasted many facets: intellectual depth and clarity as well as a burning passion and challenging, expressive creativity. Also from Brahms are a fine violin sonata and horn trio, underscoring Serkin's reputation as a great chamber musician. Again, the sound picture is remarkable given the 1933 and 1937 vintages. But the producers did include the Beethoven cello sonatas and variations Serkin made with Pablo Casals in 1953, a respected collaboration I hadn't heard before. Maybe the aging sound is partly to blame (Casals sounds especially subdued), but this team sounds almost feeble compared to Schnabel/Fournier and.
