Vassar Carlton Clements (April 25, 1928 – August 16, 2005) was a Grammy Award-winning American jazz, swing, and bluegrass fiddler. Clements has been dubbed the Father of Hillbilly Jazz, an improvisational style that blends and borrows from swing, hot jazz, and bluegrass along with roots also in country and other musical traditions. Clements was born in Kinard, Florida, but grew up in Kissimmee

Best known as a country fiddler, veteran Vassar Clements has occasionally recorded in jazz settings through the years. On this set, he is joined by a ums rhythm section with pianist Stephen Davidowski occasionally contributing a tenor solo. With the exception of one song written by bassist Gene Watson and one co-written by Clements and Jake Landers, all 11 numbers on this set were co-written by Clements and his wife, Millie Clements, although several sound as if they could have been standards in the 1930s

Vassar really shows his exquisite jazz chops on this album. An all instrumental CD, his band is tight, and everyone is challenged to keep up with his bright, fluid, tight, creative lines. I have listened to, appreciated, and loved the music Vassar Clements has been playing for about 30 years now. When I was in high school in the mid-1970's I used to "sneak" in to The Palomino Club in the San Fernando Valley of southern California to hear him (& Asleep At The Wheel, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, a dozen others) play. I had the classic "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album Vassar played on with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and "Wake of the Flood" he played on with The Grateful Dead.

Singer, songwriter, violinist. Master of Country Violin. Clements’s hillbilly jazz performances, even more than his work in country and bluegrass, continue to provide audiences with a true expression of his exceptional technical and creative abilities. Impossible to pigeonhole into one or even two musical genres, a complete list of Clements’s extensive musical accomplishments reads like a musical melting pot. To say that Vassar Clements is a musicians’ musician is an understatement. His modesty and professionalism have won him the admiration of critics, and the respect of his musical peers. Selected discography.

Vassar Clements was one of the most innovative fiddle players on the bluegrass circuit. In the early 1950s he cut his teeth playing with picking legend Bill Monroe. Clements soon realized that he wanted to try his hand at other types of music. He began throwing in different ingredients into his musical melting pot. By fusing jazz with country music, Clements honed his skills in forty years time to become one of the most sought-after session musicians. One can hear his finesse on albums by Hank Williams, Vince Gill, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, and (even) The Monkees.
