E2-E4, released in 1984, is a solo recording by German musician and Ash Ra Tempel founder Manuel Göttsching. The album consists of one minimalistic, hour-long electronic track that Göttsching recorded in one take using a sequencer, with improvised keyboards, metallic percussion, and guitar playing. The album is named after the most popular opening chess move 1. e2-e4 (which is expressed in long algebraic notation).

Manuel Goettsching - E2-E4. Story behind the cult ambient album, the predecessor of Techno & House music. Now E2-E4 is a recognised classic piece of electronic music that is seen as the beginning of ambient, house and techno. This is why Goettsching’s name was modified into Gottfather. Derrick May called the record with a chess-themed sleeve one of his favourites (and it’s not surprising that many of his greatest albums reveal Goettsching’s influence). Carl Craig, a representative of the second wave of Detroit techno, released records under the pseudonym C2C4, which was a clear homage to Manuel, not to mention the countless remixes of his works

Gottsching's second solo behind the brand of Space Rock he helped invent for a crisp but extremely poetic dialogue between his guitar and Electronica. More human than Kraftwerk, Gottsching travels similar but less paved landscapes than the classic Autobhan. Along with Michael Strother and CAN's Michael Karoli, one of the best guitar players of Rock and Electronica to ever come out from Germany. Manuel Gottsching is a real artist and his music is a masterpiece of electronic sound. Listening to E2-E4 is like a magic journey to the world of calm and relaxation. The CD was published almost 30 years ago, but the music is so modern and so innovative that it's hard to imagine how The Maestro Gottsching could realize this project without all modern computers and software. His electronic music is pure and honest.

Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4 Part 1 of 6 - YouTube. There is very little processing on the EKO on that album. So I guess we can conclude that sound at . 6 min. in the vid I posted is NOT an effect on the hats (or any drums) but just another synth percussion sound.

This is a 59' improvisation by one man, taping in real-time keyboards, then drum machine, then (after +- 30 minutes) guitar. 2 chords, one two one two. Constantly but lightly evolving, cool trance, wonderful, thank you Manuel.
