Before hitting her stride with 1974’s Caught Up, Millie Jackson delivered this tasty disc of uptown Southern soul. Both Stax raw and Philly International slick, It Hurts So Good percolates with smoky horns, snaking guitar lines, electric piano, strings, and bluesy funk grooves. In addition to her usually provocative take on relationships (both in the home and at the dark end of the street), Jackson – via Curtis Mayfield – delivers the affecting ghetto laments I Cry, Hypocrisy, and Two-Faced World.
Turn right around and Make sweet love to me Ooo wee, baby, you& Sure nuff good to me. Cause, baby, these Things youre doing to me It hurts so bad but It& worth all the misery Ooh, boy, please don& Ever take the hurt off me Cause it would hurt even worse If you would ever, ever leave (Oh, yes, it would). Even though sometimes It& hard for me to beg (This heart is killing me) I make myself hold out Cause if it kills me, I don& care
Hurts So Good" first appeared in 1973, on the back of Ms Jackson's Top 3 R&B/Top 30 Pop US success with its title track (her all-time biggest US hit, by the way). Renews automatically.
It Hurts So Good formed the centrepiece of Millie Jackson’s second Spring long player and indeed it gave the album its focus and title. The original LP’s now being re-issued on Ace’s Southbound imprint and collectors need to know that there’s a generous selection of bonus cuts. Amongst those bonuses is a previously unreleased mix of the title track. Why, Millie even wrings genuine passion out of John and Johanna Hall’s rock song, Two-Faced World. It’s proof, if ever it were needed, that the lady from Thompson, Georgia is right up there with all-time soul greats. Like Gladys Knight (whom she greatly admires), Aretha Franklin, Candi Staton and Patti Labelle, Millie Jackson has the ability to inhabit and possess any song. In many ways here work can provide the elusive aural definition of soul and the paradoxical catharsis that it inevitably involves.
Millie Jackson is the self-titled debut album by singer-songwriter, Millie Jackson. This album is different from all her other album to follow in that this album features some Motown style songs. It includes the R&B hits "A Child of God (It's Hard to Believe)", "My Man, A Sweet Man" and "Ask Me What You Want. The album was arranged by Tony Camillo and Bert de Coteaux.
