The Moiseyev Dance Company, formerly known as the State Academic Folk Dance Ensemble of the USSR, is the most celebrated folk dance company from Russia. The company has toured 60 countries and employs about 200 dancers; it was the first Soviet dance company to perform in the USA (1958). On this 1992 recording, released just after the collapse of the Soviet Union, members of the Soviet Army Band, the Moscow Radio Orchestra of Folk Instruments, and accordion players of the dance company play the dance music associated with the Moiseyev.

The Moiseyev Dance Company turns 80 this year but is still going strong. Performance of the Moiseyev ballet. In Russian history, the year 1937 has become synonymous with the worst mass repressions of the Soviet period. But it was also the year that, on Feb. 10, a dance company was founded in Moscow, one that would, just a few years later, be regarded as a symbol of the openness, joie de vivre and artistic professionalism of the peoples of the USSR. Internationally, the company is generally called the Moiseyev Dance Company, but in Moscow people usually just say they are going to see the Moiseyev dancers.

The folk dance costume was created on the basis of the folk dress, but was naturally much lightened to make it comfortable for the dance to move in it. The Russian folk dress is beautiful and colourful, rich in ornaments and embroidery. In design of clothes the nation showed as much talent and taste as in creation of songs and dances. Russian round dances seem to be as ancient as our culture itself. When staying home our ancestors were engaged in games and round dances; when leaving for a battlefield they sang of the homeland in their bylinas (heroic epics). Songs were carried all around Russia and passed from generation to generation.

Russian folk dance is an important part of Russian culture. Russian dances were also influenced by cultures from eastern Orient and western Occident. Many Russian dances became known from the 10th century. Russia witnessed various invasions from other countries.
