Attack on Memory is the second studio album and third LP overall by Cloud Nothings. It was released on January 24, 2012 by Carpark Records and was engineered by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. The album is the first to include frontman Dylan Baldi's live band as full-time members and co-writers, and has been noted for its heavier sound and darker songs, a sharp turn from the power pop of previous releases.

The entire cover: because the image is cover art, a form of product packaging, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as artwork on pirate versions or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.

I mention this because Cloud Nothings’ latest album, Attack on Memory, is the work of a band that clearly loves a breakdown, whereas their last release, Cloud Nothings, was a power-pop album that could be easily enjoyed by the er camp. Even if you ignore the fact that Cloud Nothings made this transition in under a year, its a fairly dramatic overhaul of the heartfelt pop-rock style that Dylan Baldi developed back when Cloud Nothings was just a guy, his instruments, and his computer. Cloud Nothings couldn’t have picked a better hand to produce this album than Steve Albini. He’s helped give noise-rock and alt-rock some of their defining statements, and his expertise at recording and mixing abrasive guitar tones is put to great use here.

If we’re being sincere, Attack on Memory sounds like a record built from the aggressive neuroticism and displaced sexuality of a group of ool kids in the mid-‘90s. The music would be comfortable opening an early Jimmy Eat World gig-serrated post-hardcore with a swollen heart. But I don’t mean any of that as an insult. Perhaps it’s the rampant ‘90s nostalgia talking, but Cloud Nothings do an impeccable job of capturing the wounded honesty of this music.
