I am not too wild about new Root material. It’s not my cup of tea at all, really. Their old stuff however (the demos, Zjeveni, Hell Symphony, and the Temple in the Underworld), I love. But I am in no way bashing new Root, because it obviously is extremely well put together and I can understand why someone into that form of metal would like it, but personally, when it comes to metal, I really only listen to the old stuff (and some newer bands who play older sounding forms of metal). This album is just amazing. The production, the songwriting, the riffs, the atmosphere, the vocals, etc. It is all just brilliant.

Aww, when regarding Black Metal, Czech Republic churned out nothing other than pseudo-Satanic wannabes that wanted to sound “evil” and instead ended up being amateurish. Root, the most famous of them, were founded by three metal fans and… a certain Jiří Valter, a much older man who, other than being recognized for having a branch of the Church of Satan in the country, had also a passion with singing rock, blues and even heavy metal, so he jumped in for the occasion. The band’s debut album Zjevení (“Revelation”) is exactly what its ridiculous cover artwork (both the original and that of the CD re-issue) tells it is: under-produced, simplistic, catchy and mostly moderate-slow Traditional Metal/Hard Rock with purposefully atonal progressions, shredding guitar solos and plenty of amateurishness: notice also the lack of a bass guitar. This band, pretty much like Master’s Hammer, relied almost exclusively on pure shock value, but the resulting album is hardly something of value: instead, beyond the incomprehensible Czech lyrics, the amateurish chops and the pseudo-evocative guitar sound, there’s absolutely nothing to recommend: even Master’s Hammer’s debut is preferable! The vocals tend to be double-tracked pseudo-scary sore-throat/pitch-distorted sermons, fake vomits and tentative evocations that don’t evoke anything else than pure comical reactions. If it hadn’t been covered by the fake purist Nargaroth, we doubt “Píseň pro Satana” would have been recognized as a “classic”. The re-issue includes an unreleased cut, a re-recording and some live cuts.Highlights: “Zjevení”, “Démon”.
