Mahler: Songs of Youth. Janet Baker seems particularly attuned to songs where desolation verges on something like religious feeling, and the distinctive grave beauty of her voice is the perfect instrument for them. For example, her singing of the odd-numbered songs in "Das Lied von der Erde" evince the same qualities. Barbirolli is finely attuned to this spirit too, and he clearly loved working with Baker - see their Berlioz "Nuits D'Ete" as well. These recordings of three of Mahler's song cycles are radiant examples of Baker at her peak. Accompanied by Sir John Barbirolli conducting the Halle Orchestra, this is Mahler 'as good as it gets'. Baker makes the 'Kindertotenlieder' as poignant as any singer ever has.

Faultless interpretations of these small jewels from the master's workshop. Some of these very early songs have also been orchestrated by, among others, Harold Byrns and Luciano Berio. The Wayfarer songs are buoyant and ripe with the rapture of youth that founders on the ultimate disappointment of frustrated love. The "Kindertotenlieder" touch the depths of noble despair with Barbirolli's complete understanding of both the music and his soloist's needs unforgettable. The Ruckert Lieder then bring an intimacy and personal involvement no Mahler collection can afford to be without.

Dame Janet Abbott Baker CH DBE FRSA (born 21 August 1933) is an English mezzo-soprano best known as an opera, concert, and lieder singer. She was particularly closely associated with baroque and early Italian opera and the works of Benjamin Britten. During her career, which spanned the 1950s to the 1980s, she was considered an outstanding singing actress and widely admired for her dramatic intensity, perhaps best represented in her famous portrayal as Dido, the tragic heroine of Berlioz's magnum opus, Les Troyens
