Along with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan stands out as a musician whose work caused America and the West to pay attention to Indian classical in the 1960s. This disc combines two albums from 1965: Traditional Music of India and The Soul of Indian Music, both originally on Prestige. The re-release offers Michael Gold's informative and occasionally hilarious original liner notes as well. Akbar Khan plays the sarod, which is similar to the sitar but with a resonating body at both ends of the strings, and fewer sympathetic strings

Ali Akbar Khan (14 April 1922 – 18 June 2009) was a Hindustani classical musician of the Maihar gharana, known for his virtuosity in playing the sarod. Trained as a classical musician and instrumentalist by his father, Allauddin Khan, he also composed numerous classical ragas and film scores.

Album · 1973 · 4 Songs. The excellent Ragas contains two albums originally released as LPs, 1964’s The Master Musicians of India and 1965’s The Soul of Indian Music. The first two cuts, Raga Palas Kafi and Raga Bilashkani Todi, both from the earlier album, feature the sensitive interplay of Ravi Shankar on sitar and Ali Akbar Khan on sarod, two musicians who were instrumental in bringing Indian classical music to the American pubic. Here they are accompanied by Kanall Dutta on tabla and the hypnotic drone of a tamboura). It’s a delight to follow the call and response of these masters

Ali Akbar Khan is one of the most decorated Indian classical musicians of the twentieth century - and deservedly so. Son of sarod master Allaudin, Khan began studying music at the tender age of three. Decades later he's won five Grammys, won a MacArthur genius grant, and established music schools around the globe. His playing ain't so bad, either. What else can we say? The man's a legend - give him a listen.
