Wynton Marsalis (Уинтон Марсалис) 1988. Soul Gestures In Souther Blue (3CD) Vo. - Levee Low Moan 01. "Levee Low Moan".

Wynton Marsalis' three-part Soul Gestures in Southern Blue (of which this CD is the final section) is a disappointment. None of the themes are particularly memorable and, although the individual solos are fine, not much really happens; overall it is a rather weird tribute to the blues. Actually, the main significance to this particular set is that the trumpeter had for the first time put together the nucleus to his septet

Scott Yanow couldn't be more wrong in his review. This is one of the most accessible and enjoyable sets in Wynton's catalogue. The harmony the groove is all out of this world, and I feel sorry that Scott cannot hear the music!!

The Soul Gestures in Southern Blue series is a high point in Marsalis' vast catalog. In many cases, they exceed much of his output in terms of flavor and distinct stylings. Levee Low Moan is perhaps the best of the three. The addition of Wesell Anderson's alto provides more color than the previous two outings. The "southern blue" is thick in all but especially this production. The Jaco Lawrence cover just tops it. Highly recommended.
