In the mid-1950s Boulez extended his activities to conducting. By the mid-1960s he was appearing widely as a conductor, becoming chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1971-1974) and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1971-1978). Meanwhile his creative output declined.
Pierre Boulez’s recording career began in earnest in the mid-1960s, when he signed a contract with Columbia (now Sony Classical). In general, the performances have the clarity and precision that became so typical of Boulez’s conducting, but without the expressive expansiveness that he went on to develop. Boulez went on to serve in Cleveland as principal guest conductor and musical advisor from 1967 until 1972, and has maintained close ties to that elite ensemble ever since. Early on, CBS began documenting that reputation with the benchmark recordings now being brought together in a single release.
Pierre Boulez continues with the Concerto for Orchestra by Béla Bartók, the last piece finished by the Hungarian composer and premiered in 1944 by the orchestra conductor Serge Koussevitzky who commissioned it. The undisputed master of this repertoire, Boulez gives this piece all of his motoric strength. As an encore comes the luxuriant "Fêtes" (taken from the Trois Nocturnes) by Debussy.
