Juli 2012 wurde Herbert Blomstedt 85 Jahre alt. Anlässlich seines Ehrentages wurde die Gesamteinspielung aller Bruckner Sinfonien als CD-Box veröffentlicht. Die Einspielungen entstanden in den Jahren 2005 bis 2011. Einige der Aufnahmen gelten manchen Rezensenten als n und Herbert Blomstedt als der lebende Bruckner-Interpret schlechthin. In 1975, Blomstedt was invited by the musicians of the Dresden State Orchestra (Staatskapelle) to become their music director. In that position, he frequently recorded for Western companies as well as the East German state recording company, making especially notable recordings of symphonies of Nielsen and Berwald. In 1995, he took a two-year term as chief conductor of the NDR Symphony in Hamburg and in 1998 became music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He has guest conducted many of the world's leading orchestras and his recordings have won some of the leading prizes, including the French Grand Prix du Disque and Belgian Caecilia Prize for his San Francisco recording of Nielsen's Fourth and Fifth symphonies and a German Record Critics award for Best Recording of 1995 for Mahler's Symphony No 2. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (Gewandhausorchester; also previously known in German as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig) is a German symphony orchestra based in Leipzig, Germany. The orchestra is named after the concert hall in which it is based, the Gewandhaus ("Garment House"). In addition to its concert duties, the orchestra also performs frequently in the Thomaskirche and as the official opera orchestra of the Leipzig Opera.

Herbert Blomstedt is Conductor Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony where he served as Music Director from 1985 to 1995. Throughout his tenure he and the Symphony repeatedly appeared to critical acclaim at major European concert venues and festivals including Edinburgh, Salzburg, Munich and Lucerne. From 1996 to 1998, Maestro Blomstedt was Music Director of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. As Honorary Conductor of this orchestra, he returns to Leipzig regularly. Five more orchestras awarded him the title of Honorary Conductor: NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, the Danish National Symphony and the Swedish Radio Symphony as well as the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and, most recently, in May 2016, the Staatskapelle Dresden, after already having presented him with their Golden Badge of Honour in 2007.
