Lonely Road is a step back for TRJA, after a strong debut that flexed some muscle and was a lot of fun to listen to (at least, in small listening sessions). Many of the gripes All Music has with this album I can't really align with. The stylistic departures that the band takes are usually nice and keep things from being too boring. But the biggest crime is the softening of the sound here, with cuts like "No Spell" smoothing the teeth of an emo-driven band that wasn't afraid to cut it loose. Also, the band lacks in the hooks department - rarely choruses carry infectious melodies that would put the band back on the radio. "Face Down" was a monster hit and that's where this band needs to get back to. If Fall Out Boy can dominate the airwaves, so can any other punk/pop/rock outfit. But it may be that TRJA are happy enough to just put out a new record to give fans something new to chew on. If that's the case, then fans should be prepared to not see much in the way of a comeback.
